Meet the 2025 Campbell-Wright HBCU Interns

We are proud to introduce the inaugural cohort of the Campbell-Wright HBCU Gullah Geechee Internship Program—a group of brilliant, purpose-driven students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the country. These 22 students represent a wide range of academic disciplines and bring with them a shared commitment to preserving, uplifting, and telling the stories of the Gullah Geechee people and culture.

These interns will spend the summer immersed in community-centered research, preservation projects, and storytelling efforts throughout the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor—from Sapelo Island to Historic Mitchelville to Atlantic Beach.

  • Noldine Belizaire

    Spelman College, English

    Noldine Belizaire is a rising third-year English major and Theatre and Performance minor from Broward County, Florida, currently studying at Spelman College with plans to change the world through her creative mediums and advocacy work.

  • Zoe Coker

    Howard University, Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology

    Zoe Coker is first-year doctoral student in Ethnomusicology at UCLA and a recent graduate from Howard University, where she received her BA in African American Studies. 

  • Genesis Crowley

    Howard University, Afro-American Studies

    Hailing from Sacramento, CA, Genesis Crowley is a junior Afro-American Studies major and Political Science minor at Howard University. 

  • Omar Culbreath

    Morehouse College, Africana Studies

    Omar Culbreath Jr., ’26 of Columbia, SC, is an Africana Studies major with a minor in Political Science at Morehouse College on the JD/PHD track.

  • Brianna Hunt

    Claflin University, Political Science

    My name is Brianna Hunt, and I am a junior at Claflin University majoring in Political Science, with minors in African American Studies and Criminal Justice. I am from, Conway, South Carolina, as I am deeply passionate about community engagement, social justice, and the preservation of Black history and culture. I am truly honored to participate in this program and look forward to the opportunity to learn, grow, and make a meaningful impact along the Gullah Geechee Corridor. 

  • Becca Haynesworth

    Howard University, Media Management

    Becca Rayehanatou Haynesworth is a writer and community organizer from Raleigh, North Carolina, who recently graduated from Howard University, and holds a BA in Media Management and a Double Minor in Africana Studies and Economics. 

  • Nyla Jones

    Howard University, UCLA, Ph.D. in Literature

    Nyla Jones is a Howard University alumna and a Ph.D. student in the Department of Literature at Howard University, with research interests in African American literature, Caribbean literature, and the ways Black bodies navigate urban spaces, landscapes and established dwellings.

    My name is Kevin Pernell and I am a sophomore Journalism and Mass Communications major and I attend the illustrious North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.
